Volumetric Fluid FX in Feature Films and Beyond

In today’s VFX-driven media the need to generate realistic effects like fire, smoke, explosions, dust and mist is greater than ever. This class will cover topics that include solver basics, simulation considerations for VFX production, emission and collision strategies and volume data file formats. Kevin will also discuss Weta’s in house solver and framework along with their use of Maya Fluids and show the various techniques used at Weta to create these types of effects in features like Prometheus, The Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel.

Bio: Kevin joined Weta Digital in 2005 and has contributed Visual Effects Oscar® winning work on King Kong and Avatar. He recently completed work on, Prometheus, The Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Man of Steel, and Iron Man 3. In 2012, Kevin won an Annie Award for Animated Effects in an Animated Production for: The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

Prior to Weta, Kevin worked as an effects artist at ESC Entertainment on The Matrix Revolutions and Constantine, and worked with artist and filmmaker Mathew Barney.

Kevin studied painting and sculpture at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a BFA in 1991.
